Reproduction and A.I

Our equine breeding unit attracts mares each season for chilled & frozen AI, preparing mares for walk-on breeding, and for the investigation of the problem broodmares with low fertility. Stallion semen collections are also carried out.
All mares and their foals are individually housed in a large yards to minimise stress while they undergoing treatment or insemination.
Our reproductive vets have a wealth of experience in the field of both frozen & chilled semen AI, and our breeding unit has been fu
nctioning for the last 17 years, servicing mares throughout the Northern Rivers of NSW.
Artificial Insemination
This is the process of inseminating a mare close to the time of ovulation using either freshly collected, chilled or frozen semen.
The success of any AI program is dependant on 3 factors: the fertility of the mare, the quality of the semen, and the technical skills of the veterinarian in managing the mares' cycle and determining the optimal time for insemination with regular ultrasound scans of the uterus and ovaries.
The use of AI has revolutionised the horse breeding industry by making it much easier for mare owners to greatly increase the chances of breeding a live, healthy foal to the stallion of their choice. Unfortunately this service is not available in the Thoroughbred industry.

 The advantages of AI include:
- Mares can be bred at the best time for conception, and can be bred without the risk of travel - especially for
aged or injured mares, and with young foals at foot.

- Permits breeding with problem mares with fertility issues, or those that don't show well to a stallion, or are over protective with their foal.

- Decreases the risk of breeding accidents & sexually transmitted diseases.

- Prevents stallion overuse, and allows regular semen evaluation at the time of insemination.

Our fees for artificial insemination (fresh, chilled and frozen) are charged on a per cycle basis at a contract rate. All scans, rectal examinations, inseminations, post-service infusions and routine drugs are included in this rate. Agistment  and specialised treatment costs that may be required for problem mares are not included in the contract rate. Please contact our clinic for further details.

Prior to admitting mares to our breeding facility for AI, mare owners need to have arranged a contract with the stallion owner, and advise our clinic where the stallion will be available for collection (chilled semen). For mares requiring frozen semen  AI, the semen must arrive at our clinic prior to admitting the mare.
