Medical Care Services

Musculoskeletal and Acupuncture

Picture

Many pets respond  favourably to this model of treatment. We see regular visits by some pets who otherwise would have no other option but a heavy drug regime to be able to move around and enjoy life. The change and relief is seen quickly and animals don't have the capacity to respond to placebo. So this is a remarkable treatment  not only for musculoskeletal issues but a range of disc changes and metabolic assistance.

Heart Disease

Picture
Particularly in dogs is almost always linked to hereditary factors. The most common type of heart disease found in dogs is caused by a valve that is not working correctly allowing blood to leak from one chamber of the heart to the other or to not completely empty a chamber on every beat.  Cardiomyopathy, another form of heart disease, is caused by a defect in the muscles of the heart. Even though these two syndromes develop  differently both lead to heart failure. Obesity will exacerbate any health condition.

Diabetes

Picture

As in humans, pets can suffer very similar diseases and can live with a maintenance program which involves daily doses of insulin or tablets to help offset the deficiencies that the pancreas is having. It is vital that regular checks by your vet are maintained to ensure that this disease is managed well. Circulation, eye health and weight regulation are important markers to record. Regular testing is carried out at home to maintain consistent blood sugar levels and once again diet is very, very important for the diabetic pet.

Eyes,Ears and Nose

Picture

These three senses are a vital part of an animals wellbeing and comfort, if an animal is afflicted with infections or disease in one of these major areas it needs prompt attention. It can be a localised problem or a broader one, which is reflected in one of these areas. It is important they are able to breathe without obstruction, see with clarity, and have ears that are clean and free from parasites inflammation and infection. An examination of the ear canals  and eardrum will reveal the best treatment.

Ticks

Picture
Australia has one of the deadliest ticks on the planet. Requiring tick protection  all year round. If you recognize any of the below symptoms it is essential to contact your vet immediately. This is an emergency, and not to be delayed. Do not think that because a tick has been removed, it will be enough to save your pet. Be aware of any of the following signs: loss of appetite, sudden lethargy, coughing, drooling or vomiting, weakness in hind legs, a change in breathing (noisy, laboured, faster or slower than usual) uncoordinated walk or wobbly, dilated pupils.

Venomous  Bites and Poisons

Picture
Bites from poisonous creatures e.g. snakes, spiders and ingestion of poison through eating frogs, cane toads, rat baits, often cause vomiting, diarrhoea, inflammation both locally and systemically. Unless the exact source is recognised these are all generally treated as emergencies and closely investigated. Any respiratory distress is critical and needs immediate care.

Parasites and Fleas

Picture

Fleas, mites and worms  are reasonably easy to keep at a level that will not endanger the life of your pet. Parasite burdens left unchecked lead to chronic illness and even death.

Skin

Picture
Skin problems can be a big problem, for pets and their owners, hair loss, constant itching, and obvious changes to how your pet feels about life. Approximately 50% of veterinary cases include skin conditions. Contributing factors can be  diet and environment. Atopic dermatitis, food allergies, mange and flea allergies can make your pets  life miserable. Treatments are necessary to reduce the severe reactions we see and making your pet comfortable is a chief concern. Seeing one of our vets can assist your pet to get back on track, sooner than later is the best way to approach this problem.
Look out for : discoloration of the skin, excessive licking, chewing parts of the skin,                                                                    interrupting play to itch and scratch, and hair loss.

Blood Transfusions

Picture
There are two dogs we owe a special tribute to Arnie and Sora, both boxers. Many a life has been saved by a blood transfusion, from these generous dogs.
There are times when blood loss is a real issue and lives hang in the balance.
Arnie also has been a generous mentor for puppy preschool  and a big part of Gai's life. We pay a tribute to him. He passed away in 2012 at 15yrs.
