Lameness Evaluation
The core of our relationship with the horse is the appreciation and benefit of its movement and athletic ability in all its forms. Therefore lameness in the horse represents a serious concern for the owner and a source of discomfort for the horse. Evaluating lameness requires the skills of an experienced veterinarian using a systematic approach to reach a diagnosis.
Lameness may be caused by pain, a physical problem or a neurological condition. Most problems originate from the musculoskeletal system (muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones or joints) leading to abnormal movement at the walk, trot or canter.
Using a systematic physical examination, trot outs, lunging, flexion tests and nerve blocks we are able to identify the area affected. Further diagnosis is then achieved by digital radiography or ultrasound examination.
Accurate diagnosis is essential in seeking a succesful outcome for your horse. By isolating the area of concern we are able to focus on the most current and effective therapies in the management and treatment of the problem.
